Dear ,
Thank you for your membership and support.
FSOMA joined with other Healthcare Professions in writing and appealing directly to Gov. DeSantis to sign Florida HB 451 Opioid Alternatives into law. Last week the Governor was contacted by the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists’ and the Florida Hospice and Palliative Care Association’s in opposition to this bill.
FSOMA reminded the Governor that research has shown that many suffering from opioid dependence were first exposed through a legitimate prescription from a health provider who was treating them for pain, an injury, surgery, or a dental procedure. HB 451 is provides a novel approach to this issue; and it helps patients make informed decisions about their healthcare before they are first exposed to opioids.
HB 451 directs the Florida Department of Health to develop an educational pamphlet regarding the use of non-opioid alternatives to treat pain and publish the pamphlet on its website. The bill also requires health providers to discuss non-opioid alternatives with a patient prior to prescribing, dispensing, administering, or ordering the opioid, provide a copy of the pamphlet to the patient, and document the discussion in the patient’s medical record.
Use of Acupuncture is included and referenced in the proposed DOH Pamphlet along with Massage, Chiropractic, Osteopathic manipulation and several other non-opioid treatment strategies.
FSOMA is hopeful that Gov. DeSantis will act in the coming days and sign Bill 451 into law.
